I Hope She Wins
I hope she wins.
It’s not often I’m excited to hear that my daughter wants to lose. But in this instance, I couldn’t have been prouder.
We were driving when she began telling me, with great enthusiasm, everything she had learned in her first chess lesson.
Then she told me what she was looking forward to the most: sharing her newfound hobby with her younger sister.
“I hope she wins,” she said.
“And if she does, that means I’m a good teacher…and that she’s a good student.”
While it wasn’t visible to her from the back seat, I was beaming ear to ear.
She wasn’t planning to let her sister win. She wanted to teach her well enough to earn it.
At seven, she understood something many adults never do:
Success is measured by more than what you are capable of.
It’s also measured by what others become capable of because of you.
