Flying with Turkeys?

Turkey carved on a wood cutting board

The feature course of a Thanksgiving feast.

This week I’ve spent a lot of time around turkeys.

Fitting for late November, sure, but it also reminded me of the old adage:

“You can’t soar with the eagles if you’re surrounded by turkeys.”

Timely advice. Especially when most of the country just included so many in their holiday feasts.

But being an eagle isn’t the clean metaphor we pretend it is.

Benjamin Franklin once wrote to his daughter, “He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly.”

So the choice becomes…? Be the turkey on the table or the eagle with questionable ethics?

There is the trap.

When we look around and see “turkeys,” our instinct is to create distance, to protect our well-being, and keep our focus clear. And often, that’s necessary.

But chasing the “eagle” label can be just as foolish.

Being an eagle might mean qualities we don’t actually admire, or choices we're not willing to make.

Instead of pondering which bird you’re trying to be…

When you look at your flock, are the people around you helping you rise into who you want to become, or quietly clipping your wings because they fear you might fly?
